A Lesson for White People | Human Compassion

I didn’t fully understand “White Privilege” until college. I attended Buffalo State College and following a shortened football career entered into Media. It was in Dr. Niman’s Minorities in the Media course SPC333 I believe, that I learned FULLY the difference in this society of when you are white. This course went as far to say that there really is only one way or the highway. You are, essentially white, or ‘non-white.’

This article isn’t to educate anyone on what white privilege is. To do so would be difficult, downright impossible to some white folk. I am a white man. I am proud of who I am, but not because I am white. Personally, my entire life I have battled alongside and against my black brothers, arabic brothers, mixed brothers etc in both sports and life and I have seen the warrior spirit that lies within all of us. I have seen the truth and justice that we all see as human beings.

I have seen the truth. Not everybody has.

So here’s a quick lesson for white people right now.

Are You Scared?
You should be. Especially if you are against anyone ‘non-white’

How does it feel to be scared because of the color of your skin? Do you understand that this fear of being possibly labeled as a piece of shit white person, is something that black people and other ‘non-white’ people endure everyday they leave their home? Every single place they go they are judged and looked at by untrustworthy whites. Every single place they are looked at. Every single white neighborhood they walk in they will be assumed to be dangerous.

Are You Confused?
You should be. Especially if you are against anyone ‘non-white’

How does it feel to be on the wrong side of history? Can you feel the tides changing? All those years you feared seeing ‘non white’ people rise. All those years you thought they were inferior to you and your white brotherhood. All those years you truly believed you were superior. You are not. We are all human beings with incredible potential to do amazing things from the inside of our hearts and minds.

Are You Going to Change?
You should change. Especially if you are against anyone ‘non-white’

If you want to change you will. If you don’t, you won’t. I’m not here to try and waste my energy on a racist fool to prove humans are equal. You’re probably a lost cause and you aren’t here reading this part. So this is to the everyday white man or woman. The every day person who sees a person of color or non-white person on the street and feels uncomfortable right now. Here’s your first lesson.

Look that ‘non-white’ person in the eye, the same way you would your brother or your sister. Look into their eyes. Feel the human you are looking at. That is the first step to a more harmonious relationship. I challenge you to not be afraid of what your daddy told you about ‘non-whites’. I challenge you to shatter your expectations.

We all have incredible power. You can help be a part of coming together by simply looking another human being in the eye. Is that too much to ask?
